Imagine aspiring to, shrinking from and spurning intimacy. Now imagine doing all this simultaneously and ceaselessly.
How do you map something that does not abide by the rules of cartography?
How does one even begin to understand something that lies outside of mapping controversies?
With research stemming from Sigmund Freud’s ‘porcupine’s dilemma’, this project draws on greater and lesser acts of intimacy—across habitual categories such as human/nonhuman and culture/nature—and the narrow separation between intimacy and absolute intimacy.
Artistic positions touch on Linnaean taxonomy, colonialism, cosmicism, belonging and other ideas, and in doing so unpack, by way of ongoing conversations, notions of intimacy and the attendant thrill, tension, and exhaustion.
And at least a few of these conversations have been realised in close proximity at Delfina Foundation, where during the course of the residency, intimacy became, quite unexpectedly so, the go to lens through which situations were read.
